Urgent Rescues: 5 Paddleboarders and Kayakers Saved on Christmas Day

UPDATE: Emergency services have rescued five individuals—three kayakers and two paddleboarders—across Victoria’s coastline in a series of urgent incidents on December 25, 2023. The rescues highlight critical safety concerns for water sports enthusiasts during the holiday season.

The first incident occurred around 11:30 AM near Torquay, where a group of three kayakers found themselves in distress due to strong currents. Lifesaving crews responded swiftly, successfully bringing them back to safety within minutes of their call for help.

Just hours later, at approximately 2:00 PM, two paddleboarders were reported missing off the coast of Phillip Island. Authorities confirmed they were located and rescued by local lifeguards who were patrolling the area.

Officials urge all water sports participants to exercise caution, especially during peak holiday periods. “We are grateful for the quick response of our emergency services,” said a spokesperson from Victoria State Emergency Service. “These incidents serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of our waters.”

As the sun sets on this Christmas Day, the community reflects on the importance of safety measures. Just yesterday, conditions were deemed suitable for outdoor activities, but with unpredictable weather patterns, safety should always remain a priority.

Authorities are now calling for greater awareness among paddleboarders and kayakers regarding local weather conditions and safety protocols. As the holiday season continues, they remind everyone to stay vigilant and prepared.
