Urgent Search for Alleged Gunman Dezi Freeman Intensifies Today

UPDATE: The search for alleged gunman Dezi Freeman has intensified today as authorities fear he may be receiving outside assistance. Heavy rain and thunderstorms complicate the efforts of over 100 law enforcement officers who are combing the challenging terrain around Mount Buffalo for any sign of the fugitive.

The ongoing manhunt follows a tragic incident on February 6, 2024, where Freeman allegedly shot and killed two police officers and injured a third. The chilling atmosphere in the alpine valleys of Porepunkah and Bright has residents on high alert, as many have locked their doors, fearing further violence.

As the search continues under increasingly difficult conditions, Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush issued a stern warning to anyone who might assist Freeman. “If he is being aided in his escape, whoever is considering aiding him in this escape or avoiding apprehension, they are committing a criminal offence,” Bush stated. He emphasized that Freeman does not deserve support and called for community vigilance.

Authorities have reported a lack of physical evidence of Freeman since he fled into the dense forests surrounding Mount Buffalo. As frustration mounts, there are growing concerns about a small faction of local residents who may sympathize with Freeman’s extreme “sovereign citizen” beliefs, complicating the search efforts.

The situation remains fluid as police explore all leads. They are urging the public to report any suspicious activity or potential sightings of Freeman. Officials maintain that the community’s safety is paramount and that any assistance to the fugitive will be prosecuted.

Residents are advised to remain vigilant and report any information. The ongoing search is not just a law enforcement issue; it impacts the entire community, fostering an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty.

As the weather worsens, the urgency of the situation grows. Authorities are committed to apprehending Freeman as quickly as possible, but they need the public’s help. Every piece of information could be crucial in bringing this situation to a resolution.
