Urgent Update: Alleged Car Thief Charged with 60+ Offenses in Melbourne

BREAKING NEWS: A 27-year-old man has been charged with over 60 offenses following a series of alleged car thefts in Melbourne. Authorities report that the suspect utilized electronic key reprogramming devices to steal at least 25 vehicles across multiple suburbs including Clayton, Pakenham, Ferntree Gully, Narre Warren, and Bayswater between September 2025 and January 2026.

Police confirmed the arrest occurred on January 29, 2026, when detectives from the Maroondah Crime Investigation Unit executed a search warrant at a residence in Ringwood North. During the search, they seized a key mimicking device along with seven allegedly stolen cars and seven sets of stolen registration plates.

The charges against the suspect include car theft, burglary, criminal damage, unlicensed driving, and possessing drugs of dependence, among others. He has been remanded to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on February 25, 2026, where police intend to file additional charges.

The alarming trend of car thefts has prompted police to take action, as statewide intelligence indicates that as many as one in four cars are vanishing despite owners having their keys. This surge in vehicle thefts coincides with the increasing availability of third-party key reprogramming devices, which are legal to own. In the last four months of 2025, authorities seized more than 300 devices from offenders.

Detective Sergeant Ryan Davis of the Maroondah CIU emphasized the importance of prevention, urging car owners to consider installing an on-board diagnostic port lock. This device can significantly reduce the effectiveness of key mimicking tools, providing an essential layer of security for vehicles. “A small expense could save you tens of thousands of dollars by not having to replace your vehicle if it’s stolen,” he stated.

In light of these developing events, police are reminding vehicle owners to always lock their cars and, if possible, park off the street to mitigate the risk of theft. As technology continues to evolve, the threat of car theft grows, making vigilance more crucial than ever.
