UPDATE: Ongoing negotiations are intensifying in the case against Charlie Ernest Keogh, the driver charged with the tragic death of 18-year-old Logan Power in a crash in Tamworth last year. The latest court proceedings revealed that Keogh, 26, remains in custody with bail formally refused, as discussions continue over the serious charges he faces.
In a hearing at the Tamworth Local Court earlier this week, it was confirmed that Keogh is charged with two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death and a back-up charge of negligent driving occasioning death. He has not yet entered pleas for the four charges against him. Legal representatives disclosed that the case is not yet ready to move forward due to ongoing negotiations with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
Magistrate Julie Soars granted more time for discussions and adjourned the matter until February 2024. Keogh is scheduled to appear via video link at that time. The magistrate noted that there have been no applications for bail, maintaining that he will remain in custody as the legal process unfolds.
The horrific crash occurred at approximately 2:00 AM on March 10, 2022, when Keogh reportedly lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a pole on Barnes Street, resulting in the death of Logan Power, affectionately known as “Logi Bear.” Logan was thrown from the car during the impact. His twin brother, Lachlan Power, and a female passenger survived the crash but sustained injuries, requiring treatment at Tamworth Hospital.
Crash investigators allege that Keogh was driving at a dangerously high speed when the deadly accident occurred. Following the crash, he was arrested in June 2022, and while initially granted bail, his circumstances changed after being charged with domestic violence-related offenses in September, leading to a revocation of his bail.
The case has garnered significant public attention, not only due to the tragic loss of a beloved teenager but also because of the ongoing legal complexities surrounding Keogh’s charges. The community continues to mourn Logan Power, who was a vibrant presence in Tamworth.
As negotiations proceed, legal experts and community members are closely watching for updates. The next court date in February will be crucial in determining the future of this case and whether it will finally proceed to trial.
Stay tuned for further developments in this urgent case as it unfolds.
