UPDATE: Five-year-old Hemi Andrews is defying the odds after undergoing six open-heart surgeries to combat hypoplastic left heart syndrome. His inspiring journey captures hearts as he continues to thrive against all challenges, demonstrating extraordinary courage and resilience.
Hemi was born on March 20, 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which added layers of difficulty for his family. Immediately after birth, he required emergency treatment and underwent his first heart surgery just five days later. His mother, Brooke English, recalls that traumatic moment: “After the first surgery, he was on life support, and I could see his heart beating through a clear film. It was horrific for a five-day-old baby.”
In the years since, Hemi has faced multiple complications, including pulmonary hypertension and heart failure. His family relocated from Perth to Brisbane for specialized care, initially expecting a four-month stay that extended to nearly ten months. “We were told he wouldn’t live past a certain age,” Brooke said. “But slowly, he showed signs of improvement.”
Hemi’s latest surgery, the Fontan completion, took place shortly after his fifth birthday. Now, he receives medication three times daily to manage his condition. His oxygen saturation remains low at around 80%, while the normal range is between 95% and 100%. Despite these challenges, Hemi joyfully attends kindergarten at Ellenbrook Primary School and plays with his sisters, Aaliyah and Melanie.
Brooke emphasizes the importance of community support, stating, “The HeartKids Foundation brings hope, connection, and support when it’s needed most.” Recently, Hemi received a special gift from HeartKids—a red drawstring bag filled with 266 tiny beads, each representing a surgery or procedure he has undergone. These beads serve as a testament to his remarkable journey.
The family remains deeply grateful for the medical professionals and organizations like Telethon that have provided essential support. “Living in ICU for nearly ten months gives you perspective,” Brooke reflects. “We are so thankful for our boy’s life and the opportunities ahead.”
As Hemi continues to fight, his family remains committed to his journey, drawing strength from his unwavering spirit. “He always proves everyone wrong,” Brooke said. “We are proud beyond belief that he has fought as hard as he has.”
Hemi Andrews’ story is a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of children facing life-threatening conditions. As his journey evolves, his family and community are rallying together to ensure he continues to thrive and live a life full of love and joy.
Stay tuned for updates on Hemi’s progress and the ongoing support from organizations dedicated to helping families like his.
