UPDATE: The case of Callan Davidson, accused of murdering his mother, Cheryl Davidson, is facing significant delays as the court awaits an expert psychiatric report. This latest development was revealed during a hearing at Tamworth Local Court earlier this month, where Davidson, 30, remains in custody without having entered a plea.
The murder allegedly occurred on October 26, 2024, at a caravan park in Gunnedah. Despite passing the one-year mark since the tragic event, the case has stalled due to issues surrounding Davidson’s fitness to plead. Magistrate Julie Soars expressed concern over the delays, noting, “Fitness issues were known from the beginning… there seems to have been a lot of delay.”
The Director of Public Prosecutions, represented by Jordan Kiss, confirmed that a psychiatrist’s report is expected by January 2025. However, complications arise as the Crown prosecutor responsible for the case will be on leave that month. Consequently, Kiss has requested an early date in February for the committal, which will determine whether the case proceeds to the NSW Supreme Court for trial or sentencing.
The court was informed that a case conference, essential for moving forward, cannot take place until the psychiatric report is completed. Davidson has not yet been required to enter a plea regarding the murder charge, which remains serious and unresolved.
According to police, Mrs. Davidson was found with critical injuries inside a tent at the caravan park during a welfare check. Officers initiated CPR before paramedics arrived, but she tragically died at the scene. Authorities allege a knife was seized from the location, further intensifying the gravity of the situation.
As the legal process continues, all eyes are on the upcoming February hearing. The community and family members remain anxious for resolution in a case that has drawn significant attention and concern.
Stay tuned for the latest updates as this developing story unfolds.
