Urgent Update: MP Gareth Ward Taken into Custody After Convictions

UPDATE: NSW state MP Gareth Ward has been escorted into custody following a court ruling that denied his bail application. This decision comes just days after he was found guilty of sexually abusing two young men during incidents in 2013 and 2015.

During a tense hearing, Judge Kara Shead SC stated she was “unpersuaded” by Ward’s argument that his high-profile status and disability, as he is legally blind, would make him a target in custody. The judge granted the prosecution’s application to detain the independent MP for Kiama, marking a significant shift in his legal battles.

Gareth Ward, aged 44, maintained a stoic expression throughout the hearing and is set for sentencing on September 19, 2023. He faces serious charges including sexual intercourse without consent and three counts of indecent assault, with the rape charge carrying a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison.

Ward was found guilty on all counts after a nine-week trial, concluding with a jury verdict on July 25. The court heard harrowing testimonies from both complainants regarding their encounters with Ward, revealing disturbing patterns of behavior that occurred after nights of drinking.

“You did the best you could,”

Ward was overheard saying to his barrister, Ed Anderson, after the ruling was delivered. This comment underscores the gravity of the situation as Ward faces a potential lengthy prison sentence.

In a shocking turn, despite being charged in 2022, Ward was re-elected to his seat in Kiama in 2023, holding a margin of 11.2% against his Labor challenger. However, he is now likely to face expulsion when parliament reconvenes next week.

The trial details revealed that both complainants were drawn into Ward’s home under the guise of political connections, only to be assaulted after being offered alcohol. One victim recalled an incident where Ward attempted to kiss him after a night out, proceeding to commit acts of sexual violence despite repeated refusals.

The second complainant, who met Ward at a business event, detailed how he was invited to the MP’s home only to find himself vulnerable and alone. This victim’s experience included unwanted sexual advances, further highlighting the predatory nature of Ward’s actions.

Ward’s political career, which began in 2008 as a councillor on the Shoalhaven Council, has reached a dramatic and tragic crossroads. He previously served as a minister until stepping back in May 2021 when he revealed he was under police investigation. His recent re-election as an independent has now been overshadowed by these grave convictions.

As the legal proceedings continue, the implications of Ward’s actions resonate deeply within the community and the political landscape. The upcoming sentencing is highly anticipated, with many awaiting the court’s decision on the appropriate punishment for his crimes.

This developing situation serves as a stark reminder of the serious issues of sexual misconduct within political circles, raising questions about accountability and the protection of victims.

Stay tuned for more updates as this story unfolds, with significant repercussions expected for both Ward and the broader political community.
