Urgent Update: New Law for War Memorials Sparks Controversy

UPDATE: The State Government has just passed the Crimes Legislation Amendment (War Memorial Offences) Bill 2025, aimed at enhancing protections for war memorials. However, Robyn Preston MP, Deputy Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Minister for Veterans, has expressed deep concern that the new law is inadequate in honoring the sacrifices of our veterans.

Just announced is the decision to raise the maximum prison sentence for vandalism of war memorials to seven years. Yet, Preston highlights significant shortcomings, including a modest fine of $4,400 and the ability for offenders to trade fines for community service, which she describes as a mere “slap on the wrist.”

“The Government has delayed action for nearly a year, only to replace stronger proposals with a weaker version,” Preston stated. She called this legislation insufficient, stating, “It doesn’t come close to covering the cost of repairing damage.” Veterans’ organizations and local councils often bear the financial and emotional burden left by these acts of vandalism.

Adding to the controversy, Parliament is scheduled to sit on November 11, Remembrance Day, preventing MPs from participating in local commemorations. Preston has called for a policy change to ensure that Parliament never again sits on this significant date. “It’s a simple act of respect,” she emphasized, arguing that representatives should stand beside their communities rather than being confined to Macquarie Street.

The new law has sparked outrage among veterans and their families, who seek stronger accountability for those who vandalize memorials. The ongoing discussion reflects a broader commitment to honoring the sacrifices made by military personnel and their families.

As the situation develops, veteran organizations and community leaders are expected to voice their opinions on the effectiveness of the new legislation and its implications for local memorials. The urgency of this issue resonates deeply within the Hawkesbury community, where local representatives are urged to demonstrate solidarity with veterans.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as the community rallies for stronger protections and respect for its veterans.
