Urgent Warning: Marine Rescue Calls for Caution on Local Waters

URGENT UPDATE: As summer heats up, Marine Rescue NSW has issued a critical warning urging extreme caution for boaters in the Shoalhaven region. With thousands flocking to its stunning waters, officials report a spike in distress calls from stranded vessels, raising alarms about safety on the water.

Inspector Glenn Sullivan of Marine Rescue NSW confirmed that his organization received hundreds of calls last season, emphasizing that “any waterway is dangerous.” He stressed that even slight changes in weather can create hazardous conditions. “Crossing a bar is the most dangerous thing a boat can face,” he warned, particularly highlighting the treacherous nature of coastal bars on the South Coast.

Boaters are urged to exercise heightened vigilance at popular crossings such as the Lake Illawarra Bar, Crookhaven River Bar, and Sussex Inlet Bar. Inspector Stuart Massey advises, “Before crossing, check the conditions and assess whether it is safe to proceed.” He noted that crossing during a run-in tide is preferable due to fewer compression waves.

The risks escalate for those unfamiliar with these areas, as each coastal bar presents unique challenges, especially when weather conditions shift. Sullivan recommends that boaters assess weather conditions thoroughly before attempting any crossings. “Cross with the incoming tide, going head-on into the waves,” he explained, emphasizing that once committed, turning back is not an option.

Safety remains paramount. Sullivan insists all passengers must wear lifejackets while crossing coastal bars. Furthermore, Massey reiterated the importance of proper preparations. “Marine Rescue NSW encourages boaters to seek local advice on navigation aids and safe passage.” The responsibility to proceed safely lies with the vessel’s skipper, he cautioned.

Holidaymakers planning to cross bars in unfamiliar territories should do their homework and never compromise safety. Massey highlighted that engine issues and running out of fuel are leading causes of incidents, accounting for over half of the calls Marine Rescue NSW responds to in the Illawarra Shoalhaven area. “These issues are preventable with better planning,” he noted.

Additionally, Todd Andrews, Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner, emphasized the importance of logging trip details on the Marine Rescue NSW website. This simple act ensures that if a boater fails to return as planned, a search can be initiated promptly. “A skipper who chooses to cancel or adjust a trip in poor conditions shows good leadership. If you’re unsure, don’t go out,” Andrews urged.

As the summer season progresses, boaters are reminded to prioritize safety above all. With weather patterns changing rapidly, the call to action is clear: plan thoroughly, stay informed, and ensure a safe experience on the water.
