UPDATE: New travel data reveals that international tourism in Western Australia (WA) is surging back to pre-pandemic levels, with 991,000 international tourists visiting in the year ending September 2023. This marks a significant 17 percent increase from the previous year and brings the total visitor count to just 5,000 shy of 2019’s numbers, highlighting a robust recovery in the tourism sector.
The latest figures from Tourism Research Australia show that the UK remains the top source of international visitors, contributing 140,000 tourists to WA. Following closely are Singapore, New Zealand, China, and Malaysia. Notably, visitors from China injected a remarkable $488 million into the State’s economy, while British and Singaporean travelers each spent over $300 million during their stays.
Tourism Minister Reece Whitby expressed optimism about these developments, stating, “I am incredibly proud to see Western Australia leading the nation in terms of international tourism recovery. These new statistics show international visitors are increasingly choosing WA as their holiday destination.” His remarks underscore the growing appeal of WA as a prime travel destination.
Interstate visitation also surged, with a 12 percent increase in travelers from other regions of Australia. Over 1.2 million visitors made their way to WA, solidifying its status as the country’s second most popular tourism destination. Mr. Whitby believes this upward trend will continue, stating, “I’m confident Western Australia will remain the destination of choice for travelers, offering a diverse range of unforgettable locations, events, and businesses.”
The data comes at a critical time as the tourism industry seeks to rebound fully from the pandemic’s impact. As international travel restrictions ease and global tourism resumes, WA’s recovery is a hopeful sign for other regions striving to regain their visitor numbers.
Moving forward, industry experts and officials will be closely monitoring these trends. The focus will be on enhancing travel experiences and promoting WA’s unique attractions to ensure sustained growth in international tourism. As the world opens up, more holidaymakers are expected to flock to Western Australia, promising a vibrant future for the state’s economy and tourism sector.
