BREAKING NEWS: Wangaratta’s football team has signed speedster Jack Mapleson, marking a significant boost to their squad ahead of the upcoming season. The 27-year-old half-back reunites with coach Jason Heatley, with whom he previously played at North Heidelberg in the Northern Football League.
In a recent statement, Mapleson expressed excitement about the opportunity, stating, “We had a chat, and he spoke about the big grounds and plenty of space suiting my game, so I thought I’d have a crack at the O and M.” This move comes as Wangaratta aims to strengthen their roster after a competitive season.
Originally from Sale, Mapleson moved to Coffs Harbour for high school and boasts a strong football background, including time in the Sydney Swans Academy from under-13 to under-19s. He played three games in the NEAFL in 2017 and represented NSW at the under-16 and 18 levels, alongside notable players such as Charlie Spargo and Harry Perryman.
Mapleson has had a varied career, splitting the last four seasons between North Heidelberg and Aberfeldie, where he played with his brother-in-law Michael Ktona. Despite not being recognized for speed in his junior years, he has developed significantly, finishing third in North Heidelberg’s best and fairest under Heatley in 2022.
Reflecting on Heatley’s coaching style, Mapleson praised him, saying, “His strength is knowing his players, their ability and being able to connect with them, on and off the field. He has time for everyone and is able to get the best out of his players.”
Wangaratta is also making headlines by adding 183 goals from last season’s Ovens and King league. Notable signings include Brady Bartlett, who scored 112 goals last season, including a remarkable 19-goal performance against the Benalla All Blacks. Former Wangaratta player James McClounan also joins the team after netting 71 goals.
As one of the early movers in the off-season, Wangaratta has secured talent from Airport West, including Tyson Young and Lachie Di Sebastiano, positioning themselves as strong contenders for the upcoming season. However, the team faces challenges with confirmed departures, including grand final players Alex Federico (Ivanhoe), Tyler Norton (Bell Park), Hunter Gottschling (Surf Coast Suns), and Jasper Craven, who has moved back to Queensland.
Stay tuned for more updates as Wangaratta prepares for a thrilling season ahead, with new talent ready to make an impact on the field.
