Wangaratta Rovers Dominate Wangaratta in 34-Point Showdown

UPDATE: The Wangaratta Rovers showcased their dominance in the Ovens and Murray Football Netball League with a decisive 34-point victory over Wangaratta on Sunday, April 15, 2025. In front of a roaring crowd of over 2,000 fans, the Rovers delivered a powerful performance, proving why they are a top contender this season.

Early in the match, the underdog Wangaratta team surged to a surprising 13-point lead, but the Rovers quickly regained control. They finished the game with a score of 13.11 (89) to 8.7 (55). “After quarter-time we played a lot better brand,” said Hawks’ coach Sam Murray. “Our pressure and clearance game was what we wanted. The big players played and the young players stood up.”

The Rovers’ on-baller Charlie Thompson was a standout, scoring three goals and helping the team establish their lead. Brodie Filo dominated possession, while Kieren Parnell excelled in defense. Remarkably, the Rovers blasted four goals in just six minutes early in the second term, turning the tide decisively in their favor.

The Rovers have now won three consecutive matches and are eyeing the minor premiership. Coach Murray emphasized the importance of his top players stepping up after a disappointing season opener against Wangaratta on April 5, where they lost by 12 points. “If your role is to generate for us, you need to do that,” Murray affirmed.

Despite the loss, Wangaratta’s coach Jason Heatley commended his team’s effort but acknowledged the depth of the Rovers. “They flexed and that’s the connection piece they’ve got over the other sides,” he stated. “Dayman was very crafty with his ruck work.”

Wangaratta’s Daniel Sharrock made a noteworthy return, playing for the first time in 464 days after a knee reconstruction. Co-captain Michael Bordignon also celebrated his 200th game, adding emotional weight to the match. The Rovers struck first with a goal from Will Christie, setting the tone for what would become a commanding performance.

Injuries marred the match for Wangaratta, with Aidan Tilley suffering a foot injury and Cam Barrett limping off with a knee issue. The Rovers capitalized on their opportunities, with Thompson’s clever roving leading to multiple goals, complemented by contributions from Christie and Alex McCarthy, who each added two goals.

As the league progresses, only three games remain in the split round. The current standings show the Rovers leading with 44 points (149.58%), followed by Lavington, Wangaratta, Myrtleford, and others. The competition heats up as teams vie for positioning in the final stretch of the season.

With the Rovers flexing their muscles and proving their mettle, fans are eager to see how the rest of the season unfolds. Stay tuned for more updates as the action continues in the Ovens and Murray Football Netball League.
