UPDATE: The Werribee Giants faced another tough loss in the Baseball Victoria summer league premier 1 competition, falling to Geelong by a narrow margin of 6-5 on Saturday. This loss follows a hard-fought victory against Doncaster earlier in the week, where the Giants secured a 5-2 win—their second of the season.
During the mid-week match on October 24, 2023, the Giants were the only team to play, as all other games were postponed due to rain. Coach Cameron Brown expressed relief at the team finally receiving some luck in the game against Doncaster. “It was nice to come out and play that way,” Brown said. The team’s performance featured standout contributions from Levi Packer and Addison Bishop-Worn, both of whom scored two runs.
However, Saturday’s game against Geelong proved to be a different story. The Giants trailed 5-2 after six innings but mounted a late comeback, only to fall short in the end. “We were right there and we did so much right,” Brown noted. “There were a few key moments where we didn’t execute to win.” With 15 hits to eight in favor of the Giants, the disappointing inability to convert those opportunities into runs was a key factor in the loss.
Currently, the Giants sit in 13th place after seven rounds of competition, and with a challenging week ahead, they face Malvern mid-week before taking on Fitzroy on Saturday. “We feel like if we play our best, we are right up there with anyone,” Brown asserted, highlighting the potential for future success.
In contrast, the Giants’ women’s team continues to shine, achieving a convincing 9-3 victory against Springvale. With a strong 5-1 record, they currently sit in second place on the ladder, showcasing the promising potential of the Werribee Giants in both competitions.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on the Giants to see if they can turn their fortunes around and capitalize on their talent in upcoming matches.
