UPDATE: The Western NSW Junior Carnival has officially commenced, delivering electrifying performances on its opening day, January 5, 2025. Despite looming rain, the under-15s boys and girls matches ignited excitement in Orange and Molong today, showcasing emerging cricket talent.

The home team, Orange, made a striking start at Anzac Park, clinching their first victory by 47 runs against Nepean. Orange’s boys posted a competitive total of 136, while Nepean faltered, collapsing for just 89. Isaac Churchland was the standout batsman, scoring a pivotal 43 runs off 37 balls, while bowler Thomas Wythes excelled with figures of 3/25.

In another match at Molong, Dubbo faced off against ACT Gold. ACT dominated with a phenomenal batting display, racking up 215 runs over 43 overs, ultimately winning by a staggering 140 runs. Star player Lucas Lapthorne contributed significantly, scoring 59 runs off 47 balls and taking 2/7 in four overs.

The girls’ competition kicked off at Kinross Wolaroi School, where Western showcased their prowess against South Juniors Cricket Club. With a total of 8/193, they secured a remarkable victory with a margin of 107 runs. Charlotte Shoemark shone in this match, scoring 63 runs from 66 balls, including seven boundaries.

The day also highlighted intense competition in the girls’ match between Canberra and Newcastle. Newcastle’s captain Jane Cruckshank led her team with an impressive 101 runs off 123 balls, pushing their total to 5/180. However, it was Frances Chevalier who stole the show, scoring an incredible 95 not out off just 76 balls, guiding ACT to a thrilling five-wicket win.

In the boys’ division, standout bowling performances were the highlight. Jaskaran Bhatia from Blacktown Gold dominated with an exceptional 6/11 from seven overs, leading his team to a commanding nine-wicket victory over Blue Thunder. Meanwhile, Virat Janyavula from the Canberra Rhinos delivered a commendable 5/15 from 5.1 overs, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a 53-run loss to Blacktown Black.

Photography captured the electric atmosphere of day one, and updates will continue to be provided throughout the week. Matches resume tomorrow, with one of the carnival’s highlights scheduled for the evening: a City vs. Country Twenty20 match under lights at Wade Park featuring players nominated from competing teams.
