UPDATE: Westpac Bank has officially opened its new Regional Service Centre in Moree, New South Wales, a move that could reshape banking access for rural communities. The center, located at 84 Balo Street, was inaugurated on 13 October 2025, marking a significant shift in Westpac’s approach to servicing non-metropolitan areas.
Mayor of the Country Mayors Association of NSW, Rick Firman OAM, praised this decision, especially in light of recent closures by other banks, such as the Bendigo Bank, which has left communities reeling. “Our rural, remote and regional communities in NSW keep getting hit with bad news,” Mayor Firman stated, emphasizing the importance of Westpac’s investment in local economies.
The opening follows the closure of Westpac’s Moree branch in February 2023, part of a staggering 2,100 bank closures across Australia from 2017 to 2023. This new service center is seen as a vital lifeline for the Moree Plains area, providing essential banking services to both individuals and businesses.
Moree Plains Shire Council Mayor Cr. Susannah Pearse expressed her excitement, stating, “Council is so pleased and excited to see Westpac reopen doors to the general public here in Moree.” She highlighted that this move demonstrates Westpac’s recognition of the crucial role that regional areas play in Australia’s economy.
Westpac’s Chief Executive, Anthony Miller, also addressed the opening, hinting at further investments in rural and regional financial services. “This is just the beginning,” he remarked. “Regional Australia is vital to the economy, and we continue to explore ways to invest in these communities to help unlock their full potential.”
Despite a government moratorium on bank closures until mid-2027, skepticism remains. Mayor Firman noted that many branches are operating on reduced hours and limited staff, leaving customers without local managers who can approve loans. While he acknowledged the existence of community-owned banks and credit unions, Firman emphasized that Westpac deserves recognition for this positive step.
“Our rural communities will repay loyalty with loyalty – it’s as simple as that,” Mayor Firman added, highlighting the mutual benefits of investing in these regions.
As Westpac unveils its new center, the focus shifts to how this initiative will improve financial accessibility for residents and local businesses in Moree and surrounding areas. Residents are encouraged to visit the new service center to experience firsthand the renewed commitment from one of Australia’s leading banks.
Stay tuned as we monitor the developments that arise from this significant investment in regional banking services, marking a hopeful turn for rural communities across New South Wales.
