URGENT UPDATE: Whittlesea Council has just announced the allocation of $524,000 in community grants aimed at bolstering local initiatives and nonprofit organizations. This funding, awarded to six of the thirteen applicants, underscores the council’s commitment to enhancing community engagement and support.
In a statement, Mayor Cr Lawrie Cox expressed pride in the council’s ongoing efforts, stating, “We are able to continue to support our community in delivering a huge range of events, programs, and initiatives.” The council’s funding program, which has been operational since 2023, aims to keep the community connected and vibrant.
The grants comprise three small grants totaling over $7,000 and three medium grants exceeding $40,500. Additionally, the council reaffirmed its support for six neighborhood houses within the municipality, awarding each $40,000 to assist their vital community services.
Councillor Martin Taylor highlighted the positive impact of recent grant writing workshops, attended by 90 locals, stating, “It very significantly assists them to make an application for a grant.” This feedback is crucial as it empowers community members to secure funding for their initiatives.
During the 16 December council meeting, Councillor Michael Labrador called for a detailed review of the neighborhood houses’ service agreement, aware of the financial struggles they currently face. “I know that they’re struggling at the moment, financially,” he remarked.
The council also maintains a service agreement with Whittlesea Community Connections, which received $120,000. Moreover, a one-off grant of $60,000 was allocated to Energy Smart Homes for its Solar Savers program. Events like the Diwali and Whittlesea Colour Carnival also benefited, receiving nearly $60,000 in funding.
Mayor Cox urged local businesses to consider applying for the 2026 business-to-business grant program, which offers up to $10,000 to support local enterprise growth. “We know the program delivers in helping establish or grow businesses that employ locally and are located in our city,” he emphasized.
Round 2 applications for the business grant program are now open, with more information available at whittlesea.vic.gov.au/businessgrant. This funding opportunity represents a crucial lifeline for local businesses and organizations eager to make a difference in their community.
