Woman Convicted for Stealing $285 Poker Win During Bar Break

UPDATE: A 34-year-old woman has been convicted of larceny after brazenly snatching a winning poker machine ticket worth $285 while the player briefly stepped away to buy a drink. Savannah Dorsett, from Davidson Court, Orange, was found guilty in her absence at Bathurst Local Court on September 24, 2025.

The incident unfolded on the evening of May 21 at a local hotel in Bathurst. As a nearby player celebrated a feature win, he momentarily left his machine to grab a drink from the bar. During his absence, Dorsett seized the opportunity, taking the ticket and moving to another poker machine.

Upon returning, the victim realized his winnings were missing and confronted Dorsett, who callously responded, “Go f–k yourself.” Frustrated, he alerted the hotel staff and immediately called the police. Authorities arrived shortly after to address the theft.

Magistrate Gemma Slack-Smith presided over the case, reading the charge against Dorsett in open court and confirming the conviction in her absence. Dorsett was fined $450 for her actions, which have sparked outrage among local patrons and raised concerns about security measures at gambling establishments.

This conviction highlights the risks of leaving personal belongings unattended in public spaces, especially in environments where large sums of money are involved. As gambling activities continue to thrive, it serves as a reminder for players to remain vigilant at all times.

What happens next for Dorsett remains unclear, but her actions have certainly made headlines and raised awareness about the importance of safeguarding personal property. As this story develops, it underscores the need for improved security protocols in venues hosting gambling activities.

Stay tuned for further updates on this unfolding situation.
