URGENT UPDATE: Renowned artist Yoonjung Kim is set to unveil her highly anticipated solo exhibition, ‘Interwoven’, at the Bowery Gallery in Brimbank starting 24 October. This marks Kim’s first exhibition since her relocation from Melbourne to Seoul in 2020, and it promises to be an emotional journey through memory and sensation.
Kim’s artwork draws deeply from her personal experiences, exploring themes of memory and emotion through vibrant painterly gestures. “The works explore memory and emotion through painterly gestures, inspired by decorative objects, plants, and animals discovered across Melbourne’s western suburbs,” Kim stated.
The exhibition features a notable ribbon motif, which Kim uses to unfold her inner narratives. “The ribbon is a really familiar object to me. It seems to bring out all sorts of emotions. I wanted to use them as a structure to hold or wrap my emotions or memories,” she explained. This familiar symbol resonates with themes of joy, celebration, love, and the weight of social expectations.
As attendees explore ‘Interwoven’, they will encounter various objects that symbolize Kim’s emotional landscape. “Sometimes it’s nostalgia, very warm feelings in my childhood, and sometimes anxiety too,” she shared. Kim hopes her audience will engage with her work on a personal level, encouraging reflections on their own memories. “I want them to find their own memories through my paintings because my work is a bit symbolic; people can feel all different feelings and memories,” she added.
‘Interwoven’ is supported by the Brimbank Council and will be open to the public from 24 October until 10 January. The exhibition is free to view at 33 Princess Street, St Albans, from Monday to Friday, 9 AM – 5 PM and Saturdays, 9 AM – 12:30 PM.
