Youths Scale Banksia Hill Roof, Authorities Respond Amid Crisis

BREAKING: A group of approximately six youths have scaled the roof of the Banksia Hill Detention Centre in Canning Vale this afternoon, prompting urgent responses from authorities. The incident began around 2:30 PM and escalated as detainees threw bricks, poles, and fire extinguishers, highlighting ongoing concerns over Western Australia’s juvenile justice system.

This alarming event has reignited criticism from opposition leaders regarding the state’s handling of youth rehabilitation. Just last week, it was confirmed that the controversial Unit 18 at Casuarina Prison will remain operational for another three years, while plans for a new $147 million facility beside Banksia Hill are underway.

Opposition corrective services spokesman Adam Hort condemned the government’s delays, stating, “We needed a new youth rehabilitation centre yesterday. Detention is critical for community safety and turning young lives around, but it only works when the system works, and right now it doesn’t.”

The youths’ actions on the roof are reminiscent of previous incidents that resulted in tens of millions of dollars in damage at Banksia Hill in 2022, leading to the establishment of Unit 18. The situation remains tense as prison officers in riot gear monitor the events from the ground, with the youths continuing to release fire extinguishers and damage air-conditioning units.

In response to the incident, Corrective Services Minister Paul Papalia labeled the “violent and disruptive behaviour” as “unacceptable.” He stressed the challenges faced by youth custodial officers and reaffirmed the need for a purpose-designed facility for the state’s most high-risk youth. “This incident highlights the urgent need for a new facility, as announced by our government last week,” Papalia stated.

As authorities work to safely bring the youths down, the implications of their actions are felt not only within the detention centre but also across the community. This event underscores the critical need for systemic changes within the juvenile justice framework, with officials and community leaders calling for immediate reform.

The situation is developing rapidly, and updates are expected as authorities manage the incident. Stay tuned for further details as this story unfolds.
