UPDATE: Zac Williams showcased his dynamic skills as Dubbo CYMS, affectionately known as the Fishies, clinched hosting rights for the 2025 Peter McDonald Premiership Grand Final following a commanding 24-0 victory over Orange CYMS on August 31, 2023.
Williams, who started at centre, scored the first of three quick tries, leading the Fishies to an early 16-0 advantage that proved insurmountable for the visitors. This decisive win secures Dubbo’s place in the grand final against rival Forbes, marking a significant milestone for the 22-year-old Williams, who expressed his excitement and gratitude, saying, “This is something special.”
As the preliminary final unfolded at Apex Oval, the Fishies dominated the field. Williams opened the scoring, followed by winger Vuniani Gatabua who crossed the line just 15 minutes into the game. Despite a spirited effort from Orange CYMS, mistakes marred their attack, allowing Dubbo to extend their lead through a stunning 90-meter run by fullback Jeremy Thurston.
With the Fishies firmly in control at halftime, the second half saw Thurston adding another try, and Alex Bonham sealing the deal with a late penalty goal. However, the victory was bittersweet as coach Shawn Townsend faces injury concerns ahead of the grand final. Star halfback Bayden Searle limped off due to a knee injury, alongside fullback Jeremy Thurston, who continues to battle knee issues.
Williams reflected on his journey back to Dubbo, saying, “Leaving Sydney was pretty hard, but once I got back here with my family, I feel like I settled in pretty quickly.” The versatile player has contributed significantly to the Fishies’ success this season, adapting to multiple positions as needed.
The Fishies have demonstrated resilience throughout the season, overcoming numerous injuries to secure the minor premiership. However, as they prepare for the grand final, they must also address the potential absence of key players like captain Jarryn Powyer and Mitch Cleary, who were substituted late to ensure their fitness.
In the aftermath of the match, Orange CYMS captain-coach Jack Buchanan acknowledged his team’s shortcomings. “To get one win short is a real kick in the guts, but we got outplayed by a team that wanted it more,” he stated, emphasizing the Fishies’ superior completion and execution.
As anticipation builds for the grand final showdown against Forbes, all eyes will be on Dubbo CYMS to see if they can capitalize on their momentum and secure a championship title. Fans are eagerly awaiting updates on player injuries and the final lineup as the grand final date approaches.
Stay tuned for more updates on the Fishies’ journey to the grand final and the latest developments in the upcoming showdown!
