An Australian man, identified as David Clark, has tragically died after being struck by a police vehicle in London while crossing the street. The incident occurred on January 7, 2024, in the Southwark area, as the police vehicle was responding to an emergency call.
According to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), Mr. Clark, 35, was crossing at the junction of Borough High Street and Trinity Street when the collision took place. The IOPC confirmed that the Metropolitan Police vehicles were traveling south on Borough High Street shortly after 12:30 a.m., with their sirens activated and emergency lights flashing.
A spokesperson for the IOPC explained that as the first police vehicle approached the junction at Great Suffolk Street, it collided with Mr. Clark, who appeared to be crossing the road. The officers in both police vehicles immediately stopped to provide first aid, but tragically, Mr. Clark was pronounced dead at the scene.
The IOPC has initiated an investigation into the incident, which began on the same morning. They have already reviewed CCTV footage and body-worn video from the police officers involved. Ongoing inquiries are being conducted to gather further evidence from additional CCTV cameras in the vicinity.
Investigation and Community Impact
The IOPC’s director, Amanda Rowe, expressed condolences to Mr. Clark’s family and friends in both the UK and Australia. She stated, “Our deepest sympathies are with Mr. Clark’s family and friends… We have met with his family to advise them of our investigation, and they will be provided with regular updates.” The family has requested privacy during this challenging time.
In alignment with standard procedures following incidents involving police and civilian fatalities, the officers involved are currently being treated as witnesses in the ongoing investigation. A post-mortem examination has been conducted, and the IOPC is awaiting a date for an official inquest to commence.
The incident has raised concerns in the community about police response times and safety measures in urban areas. Local residents have expressed their shock and sadness, emphasizing the need for thorough investigations to ensure accountability and prevent future tragedies.
As the investigation continues, the IOPC remains committed to uncovering the full circumstances surrounding Mr. Clark’s death. Further updates are expected as new evidence is reviewed and the inquiry progresses.
