A tragic road accident involving two buses on one of Uganda’s major highways resulted in the deaths of 46 people and left several others injured. The incident occurred just after midnight on the highway connecting Kampala, the capital, to the northern city of Gulu. Initial reports had placed the death toll at 63, but the Ugandan police later revised this figure, clarifying that some individuals found unconscious at the scene had been mistakenly included in the early count.
The collision took place as two buses attempted to overtake other vehicles, including a truck and an SUV. According to a statement from the Uganda Police Force on the social media platform X, the two buses met head-on during the overtaking manoeuvres, leading to the catastrophic crash.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. Preliminary findings suggest that reckless driving may have contributed to the collision, which occurred during a period of heavy traffic on the busy highway. The police are expected to examine the actions of the drivers involved, as well as the condition of the vehicles.
The accident has drawn attention to road safety in Uganda, where traffic incidents are not uncommon. In recent years, the government has made efforts to improve road safety regulations and enforcement, yet such tragic events continue to occur.
President Yoweri Museveni expressed his condolences to the families of the victims while campaigning for the upcoming general election, scheduled for January 2024. The President’s visit to the area, close to where the accident took place, underscores the impact of this disaster on the community.
As the investigation proceeds, the Ugandan public is calling for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to prevent similar incidents in the future. While the nation mourns the loss of life, the focus shifts to ensuring safer roads for all.
