The fallout from a brief moment on a jumbotron during a Coldplay concert has turned into a public relations nightmare for two professionals. Kristin Cabot, 53, the former HR manager at technology firm Astronomer, has opened up about her unexpected appearance alongside her boss, CEO Andy Byron, on the kiss cam during a performance in Foxborough, Massachusetts, in July 2023.
In her first public comments since the incident, Cabot clarified that the moment captured on camera was the first time she and Byron had made physical contact. She stated that the two had not spoken since that night, when their lives became intertwined with a viral sensation that would lead to both of their departures from the company.
The incident occurred in front of an audience of approximately 50,000 concertgoers and quickly spread across social media, sparking speculation about their relationship. Coldplay’s lead singer, Chris Martin, even quipped, “Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy,” before the camera shifted to another couple in the crowd.
Cabot described feeling “on top of the world” at the concert, a feeling that quickly shifted to panic when she realized her estranged husband, also named Andrew, was in attendance. “I grabbed him,” she recalled, revealing how a few drinks had loosened her inhibitions when she reached for Byron, who was dancing behind her.
The two had recently confided in each other about their respective separations from their partners, but Cabot’s immediate reaction upon seeing the kiss cam was one of fear and embarrassment. “Oh God, Andy’s my effing boss,” she remembered thinking, realizing the potential professional implications of the moment.
Shortly after the concert, her husband sent her a screenshot of the kiss cam footage that had been posted on TikTok, informing her of its viral status. Cabot has since vehemently denied any romantic involvement with Byron, asserting that their relationship was strictly professional. “The amount I sacrificed to get where I did in my career,” she explained, pointing out the challenges she faced as a woman in a male-dominated industry.
The aftermath of the incident has been harsh for Cabot. She noted that she has been inundated with derogatory comments, branding her as a gold digger and suggesting she had leveraged her position for personal gain. “I have worked very hard to dispel that notion,” she stated, expressing frustration at being labeled in such a damaging way.
Following the incident, both Cabot and Byron left their positions at Astronomer. Although Cabot claims the board asked her to remain, she has been actively seeking new employment but has faced dismissive feedback, with some suggesting she is now “unemployable.”
Cabot joined Astronomer as chief people officer in 2022, and her contributions were acknowledged by Byron, who praised her as a proven leader with a dedication to fostering inclusivity. This moment of notoriety, however, has overshadowed her professional achievements.
The impact on her family has also been significant. When she informed her children about the kiss cam incident, her 14-year-old daughter burst into tears, while her 16-year-old son attempted to console her. Both children have since expressed embarrassment, refusing to allow her to pick them up from school.
In light of the ongoing scrutiny, Cabot has engaged the services of communications consultant Dini von Mueffling, known for her work with high-profile figures like Monica Lewinsky, to raise awareness about the harmful consequences of online mobbing.
Cabot’s story serves as a reminder of how quickly a single moment can alter lives, transforming private struggles into public spectacles. As she navigates this challenging chapter, she remains focused on re-establishing her professional identity amidst the noise.
