The French President, Emmanuel Macron, has called for more stringent actions to combat antisemitism in France, despite a reported 16 percent decline in incidents over the past year. The country’s Ministry of the Interior described current antisemitic acts as remaining at “historically high” levels for three consecutive years. This ongoing issue has been exacerbated by the recent conflict following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, which has heightened tensions across Europe.
During a ceremony commemorating the 20th anniversary of the death of Ilan Halimi, a Jewish man who was kidnapped and murdered in 2006, Macron emphasized the need for collective action. “Schools, the justice system, elected officials: everyone must be mobilised,” he stated, underscoring the societal obligation to address this pervasive issue. Halimi’s tragic case, which involved his abduction and torture for 24 days, resulted in the leader of the gang being sentenced to life imprisonment in 2009.
Macron criticized what he termed the “poison of online hatred,” calling on the European Commission to impose accountability on major online platforms. “In the France of the Enlightenment, ‘free speech’ stops at antisemitism and racism,” he asserted, highlighting the need for a robust response to hate speech in digital spaces.
The rise of antisemitism is not confined to France. Reports indicate a worrying trend across Europe. In the UK, the Community Security Trust reported 3,700 antisemitic incidents in 2025, marking a four percent increase and the second-worst year on record. In Germany, cases of antisemitism surged nearly 100 percent to 8,627 incidents last year, according to the Federal Research and Information Point for Antisemitism. This increase is linked to violence, vandalism, and threats associated with the ongoing Gaza conflict.
The French government’s renewed focus on combating antisemitism reflects a broader European concern. Macron’s call to action seeks to unify various sectors of society in addressing hate and intolerance, aiming to foster a safer environment for all communities.
