North Korea Unveils Advanced Missile at Parade with Global Leaders

North Korea showcased its latest military advancements, including the new Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), during a military parade on March 15, 2024. The event, which celebrated 80 years of the ruling Workers’ Party, was attended by prominent officials from Russia and China, highlighting the strengthening ties among these nations.

Attendees included Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, Li Qiang, Premier of China, and To Lam, Vietnam’s leader. Their presence underscores the geopolitical significance of this military display, especially in light of ongoing conflicts in the region.

According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the parade featured North Korea’s “most powerful nuclear strategic weapon system,” alongside various advanced military technologies. Thousands of spectators filled the streets of Pyongyang, adorned in traditional attire, as they waved national flags and cheered while military vehicles paraded through the capital.

In his address, Kim Jong Un declared that North Korea’s military is “invincible,” crediting the armed forces for their contributions to national efforts and referencing the North Korean troops who have reportedly fought alongside Russian forces in Ukraine. He stated, “The heroic fighting spirit displayed… for international justice… demonstrated the ideological and spiritual perfection.”

Seoul has reported that around 600 North Korean soldiers have died and many more have been injured while serving in the conflict. KCNA emphasized that the parade demonstrated North Korea’s “inexhaustible defense technology potential” and its rapid military development that cannot be overlooked by the international community.

The event coincides with discussions about a potential meeting between North Korea and the United States at the upcoming APEC summit in South Korea. Historical dialogues have occurred between North Korea and former U.S. President Donald Trump, who had previously described his relationship with Kim as one of mutual affection, although these talks did not yield a lasting agreement on denuclearization.

Recent joint statements from Moscow and Pyongyang have shown Russia’s robust support for North Korea’s defense initiatives. Seong-Hyon Lee, a visiting scholar at the Harvard University Asia Center, remarked that the parade should be viewed as part of a broader shift in regional geopolitics. He noted that it serves as a warning that South Korea’s alliance with the United States will be countered by a consolidated bloc of North Korea, Russia, and China.

The military showcase not only highlights North Korea’s ambitions but also reflects the evolving dynamics of international relations in East Asia. As tensions persist, the implications of such displays will continue to resonate across the globe.
