Pope Leo XIV has called a gathering of cardinals from around the world for a two-day meeting aimed at aiding him in governing the Catholic Church. This consistory is scheduled for January 7-8, 2025, immediately following the conclusion of the Holy Year on January 6, a significant event celebrated once every twenty-five years in Christianity.
The Vatican announced that this meeting marks a pivotal moment for Pope Leo, as his initial months in office have largely been consumed by fulfilling the obligations of the Holy Year. This includes engaging with various pilgrimage groups and conducting special Jubilee audiences and Masses. Furthermore, the new pontiff has been focused on resolving outstanding issues from the tenure of his predecessor, Pope Francis, who served until Leo’s election.
The January consistory represents a critical opportunity for Pope Leo to shift his focus toward his own agenda, following his election as the first U.S. pontiff on May 8, 2024. It is noteworthy that Leo has invited all of the world’s cardinals to Rome, contrasting with Pope Francis’ approach. The previous pontiff often bypassed traditional consistories in favor of a smaller group of eight to nine selected cardinal advisers, which he relied on for governance and decision-making.
The Vatican has characterized Leo’s inaugural consistory as a means of fostering “common discernment” and providing support and advice to the Holy Father in his significant responsibilities regarding the governance of the universal Church. The primary focus of this convening will be consultative, as no new cardinals are expected to be appointed during this session.
This shift back to a broader gathering of cardinals may signal a renewed commitment to collaborative governance within the Church, reflecting the diverse perspectives of its leadership. As Pope Leo XIV embarks on this new chapter, the outcomes of the consistory could influence the direction of the Church in the years to come.
As the meeting approaches, all eyes will be on the Vatican to see how this engagement will shape Pope Leo’s vision for the future and address the pressing issues facing the Catholic community globally.
