Raiders Star Ethan Strange Misses Crucial NRL Semifinal

Ethan Strange has been ruled out of the Canberra Raiders’ NRL semifinal against the Cronulla Sharks, a significant setback for the minor premiers as they aim to avoid an early exit from the finals. The five-eighth, who has been instrumental in the Raiders’ successful season, fell ill overnight and will be replaced by utility player Simi Sasagi in the halves.

Sasagi has had a commendable year, showcasing his versatility, but he has yet to start a first-grade game in the halves. He has, however, played a few matches in the New South Wales Cup in that position. The Raiders have also made adjustments to their bench, promoting English recruit Matty Nicholson to replace Sasagi, while Danny Levi has been elevated to the 18th man.

Ethan Strange has emerged as a key player for the Raiders this season, known for his exceptional running game and ability to score tries. His absence raises concerns for the team’s offensive strategy, particularly as halfback Jamal Fogarty will need to shoulder more responsibility. Fogarty’s performance has recently come under scrutiny following a lackluster showing in the week-one finals loss to Brisbane.

This injury news follows the Raiders’ efforts to manage another star player, Josh Papalii, leading into last week’s qualifying final. Coach Ricky Stuart had expressed confidence just days prior, stating he anticipated a fully fit squad for the crucial match against the Sharks, who are considered one of the strongest teams entering the finals series.

The semifinal is set to take place on March 15, 2024, at 19:50 local time. The winner will advance to face the Melbourne Storm at AAMI Park in a grand-final qualifier the following week. Fans can follow the action through live blogging and commentary provided by ABC Sport.

With the stakes high, the Raiders will need to adapt quickly in the wake of Strange’s absence, as they look to solidify their position among the league’s elite teams.
