Indonesian rescuers are intensifying efforts to locate a family of four Spanish tourists who went missing after their boat sank near the popular Komodo National Park. The vessel, carrying a total of 11 individuals, encountered engine failure while traveling from Komodo Island to Padar Island on the evening of March 15, 2024.
According to Fathur Rahman, head of the Maumere Search and Rescue Office, the tour boat was transporting six Spanish tourists, four crew members, and a local guide when it capsized. “Three people were rescued by a passing vessel, and four others were picked up by a search and rescue team,” Rahman stated. He confirmed that the missing passengers include a husband, wife, and their two children, emphasizing that search efforts continue.
Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its stunning landscapes and unique wildlife, attracts thousands of tourists each year for activities such as diving and trekking. The park is also home to the endangered Komodo dragon, making it a significant draw for nature enthusiasts.
Rescue operations faced challenges due to rough seas, with waves reaching heights of up to 2.5 meters, as well as darkness that hampered visibility overnight. Survivors were treated at the port office in Labuan Bajo, where medical attention was provided following their ordeal.
As conditions improved the following morning, search and rescue teams, equipped with rigid inflatable boats and supported by local fishermen, resumed their search. Videos released by the National Search and Rescue Agency illustrate the challenging circumstances faced by rescuers in the turbulent waters.
Indonesia, consisting of over 17,000 islands, relies heavily on ferries and boats for transportation. Unfortunately, incidents like this are not uncommon, often attributed to lax safety standards and overcrowding on vessels.
As the search for the missing family continues, authorities remain hopeful for a positive outcome. Rescuers are determined to locate the missing Spanish nationals and provide closure to their loved ones.
