A recent attack by Sudanese paramilitary forces has resulted in the deaths of at least 28 individuals in the town of Misteriha, located in North Darfur. The assault, carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), also left 39 others injured, according to the Sudan Doctors Network, an organization monitoring the ongoing conflict in the country. This incident marks a significant escalation in the protracted violence that has plagued Sudan since the war began in 2023.
The RSF targeted Misteriha, a stronghold of tribal leader Musa Hilal, who belongs to the Rizeigat Arab tribe, which constitutes a majority of the RSF’s fighters. Reports indicate that RSF forces initiated their offensive on the weekend with drone strikes, which struck Hilal’s guesthouse. Following this, they launched a ground assault on March 25, 2024, overtaking the town and engaging in brutal tactics, including shelling a local healthcare centre.
Emergency Lawyers, an independent organization documenting atrocities in Sudan, reported that many homes were set ablaze during the attack, forcing residents to flee to nearby villages. The RSF did not provide immediate comments regarding the motives behind this incursion, which raises concerns about escalating tribal tensions in a region historically marked by violence.
The conflict in Sudan erupted after rising tensions between the Sudanese army and the RSF escalated into widespread fighting. Since then, the war has led to thousands of deaths and triggered mass displacement, disease outbreaks, and severe food insecurity. The situation has been exacerbated by targeted attacks on humanitarian workers, further complicating aid delivery efforts.
According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, the humanitarian crisis has reached alarming levels, with over 14 million people displaced. The report highlighted a concerning rise in severe acute malnutrition, predicting cases could increase to 800,000 by the end of 2025, a four percent rise from previous estimates.
Aid organizations, including Islamic Relief, have called for an immediate ceasefire to facilitate the delivery of aid to affected areas in Darfur and Kordofan. Zia Salik, interim UK director of Islamic Relief, emphasized the urgent need for peace, stating, “The main thing that needs to happen is, of course, a ceasefire. Ultimately, that is what’s causing the pain and the difficulty for all of the civilians that are caught in the crosshairs.”
The attack on Misteriha follows a brutal assault in el-Fasher, the provincial capital of North Darfur, where RSF forces reportedly killed over 6,000 people in late October 2023. The international community continues to grapple with the implications of this prolonged conflict, which has been characterized by atrocities that some UN-backed experts have described as having “the hallmarks of genocide.”
As the situation in Sudan deteriorates, the urgent need for a resolution becomes increasingly apparent, with humanitarian groups struggling to meet the ever-growing needs of the displaced population.
