Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced his intention to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump “in the coming days,” indicating progress toward a potential peace agreement aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict with Russia. In a message posted on Telegram and X on Friday, Zelensky emphasized that significant developments could occur before the end of the year, reflecting a renewed sense of optimism regarding the negotiations.
During this communication, Zelensky indicated that he had received updates from Rustem Umerov, Ukraine’s chief negotiator and head of the National Defence and Security Council. The Kyiv Post reported that Zelensky is expected to travel to Florida, where Trump is vacationing for the Christmas holiday, potentially as early as Sunday. This information comes from an unnamed source familiar with the situation.
Peace Plan Discussions
The discussions between Kyiv and Washington focus on aligning a comprehensive 20-point peace plan to present to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Key elements of the plan include robust security guarantees modeled after NATO’s Article 5 and a global development program for Ukraine following the end of hostilities. While most components of the plan have garnered agreement, challenges remain, particularly regarding Ukraine’s firm stance against any territorial concessions in the contested eastern region of Donetsk.
On Thursday, Zelensky shared insights from a productive conversation with U.S. officials Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner regarding the peace initiative. He described the discussion as “very good,” lasting nearly an hour, and acknowledged the work still needed to address sensitive issues. In his nightly address, Zelensky stated, “But together with the American team, we understand how to put all of this in place. The weeks ahead may also be intensive. Thank you, America!”
Kremlin’s Response
In response to the ongoing talks, the Kremlin is currently reviewing information provided to Putin by his envoy Kirill Dmitriev, who recently engaged in discussions with U.S. representatives in Miami. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov indicated that future engagements with the United States will depend on decisions made by President Putin.
As the situation evolves, the potential meeting between Zelensky and Trump may serve as a pivotal moment in the quest for peace, with both leaders under pressure to navigate the complexities of international diplomacy and domestic expectations.
