Brothers Journey 3,000km to Historic Birdsville Races

UPDATE: The Keys brothers have made a historic journey of over 3,000km from Melbourne and Tasmania to participate in the Birdsville Races, marking the first time the island state has been represented in the event’s 143-year history. This weekend’s races brought together thousands of spectators in the outback of Queensland, where excitement was palpable.

The brothers—John, Ken, and Robert Keys—each had horses competing in various races, with Robert’s horse, Wholesome, finishing eighth in race five, while John’s Native Clan came in 10th, and Ken’s Anointed Lad placed 12th. The spotlight, however, shone on the Birdsville Cup, a feature race boasting a prize of $60,000, which was won by Testator Silens, a horse in which local mayor Francis Murray holds a stake. Notably, this year’s Cup saw female jockeys claim the top three spots, with Bailie Baker taking the lead.

The Keys brothers reflected on their unique bond forged through shared experiences in their youth, where they rode ponies bareback to help on their family farm on King Island. Robert expressed the friendly rivalry among them, humorously stating that finishing third last would still be a win in their eyes.

Thousands of attendees flocked to Birdsville for the races, which have become a bucket-list event for friends and families across Australia. The atmosphere was electric, with crowds gathering at the Birdsville Hotel and outside the boxing tent run by Fred Brophy, who announced this would be his final year hosting at Birdsville after 43 years.

“I feel a bit of a tear in my eye,” Mr. Brophy shared before his last match. “If you haven’t been to the Birdsville Races, you haven’t been anywhere in Australia; you don’t know what you’re missing out on.” His heartfelt sentiment reflects the collective spirit and camaraderie that define the Birdsville Races.

As the races continue, all eyes are on the Keys brothers and their competitors as they strive for glory. The emotional connections, both personal and communal, make these races not just a sporting event, but a celebration of life, legacy, and brotherhood in the heart of Australia’s outback.

Stay tuned for more updates as the Birdsville Races unfold this weekend, promising thrilling races and unforgettable experiences amidst the dusty backdrop of Queensland.
