UPDATE: Aitken Hill Community Centre has officially become the first council facility in the region to transition to a fully electrified system as of September 24, 2023. Mayor Jarrod Bell celebrated this groundbreaking launch alongside members of the Hosanna Community Group, who frequently utilize the centre for community lunches, marking a significant environmental milestone.
The centre has permanently switched off gas, with all appliances now powered by 100% renewable electricity, supported by a new solar system installed on the roof. This major shift is projected to save the council around $4,700 annually in energy costs while simultaneously reducing carbon emissions by an impressive 15 tonnes each year.
Mayor Bell emphasized the dual impact of this initiative, stating, “This project highlights two critical issues affecting our community – the urgent effects of climate change and the rising energy costs.” He pointed out that gas, once seen as a cheaper alternative, no longer holds that status, reinforcing the council’s commitment to cleaner, greener energy solutions across the region.
This upgrade at Aitken Hill is just the beginning. The Hume Council has announced plans for a series of conversions, ensuring that all new council buildings will operate exclusively on electricity, with existing facilities gradually following suit. The council has already demonstrated significant results, having installed solar panels across more than 130 council facilities, which are generating an annual savings of approximately $800,000 and reducing emissions by around 4,500 tonnes.
As communities face escalating costs and environmental challenges, the shift to all-electric systems represents a proactive measure that promises to ease financial burdens and foster a sustainable future. The Aitken Hill Community Centre’s transformation serves as a model for other local governments, highlighting the potential for substantial change when it comes to energy consumption and environmental responsibility.
Residents are encouraged to engage with their local council about similar initiatives and to support ongoing efforts toward sustainability. The immediate benefits of such projects are clear, paving the way for a cleaner, more efficient energy landscape.
Stay tuned for further updates as the council progresses with its electrification plans, setting the stage for a greener tomorrow.
