Local Collector Reveals Secrets to Finding Hidden River Gold

UPDATE: Local treasure hunter Eric White is taking center stage on Channel Nine’s “Antiques DownUnder,” showcasing his remarkable finds, including a 1770s cannon and a rare $6,000 antique bottle. The episode featuring White is set to air before Christmas, following a nine-hour filming session at his home on October 1.

White’s passion for mudlarking along rivers near historic homesteads has unearthed incredible treasures. He explained, “Paddle steamers threw everything overboard because they didn’t go to tips in the early days.” This insight reveals how collectors can find hidden gems in waterways that once served as dumping grounds for steamboats.

During the filming, White shared his extensive Bendigo Pottery collection with presenter Gregory Bickford and pottery expert Lee Bradshaw. He described the experience as “a thrill,” although he admitted to feeling “a little nerve-wracking” at first. “Once we got into it, my passion just came through,” he stated, emphasizing his deep love for collecting.

Among his prized possessions, White highlighted a rare 1940 Bendigo Pottery clock case with stunning majolica glaze. He has spent years exploring the waterways of New South Wales, where he discovered the 1770s cannon with his son about eight years ago. “You just don’t know what you’re going to find,” White added, encapsulating the excitement of treasure hunting.

As viewers eagerly anticipate the upcoming episodes, White encourages fellow collectors, saying, “If you’re into collecting anything, not just antiques, this show offers a lot of different stuff.” His segment on “Antiques DownUnder” aims to inspire others to pursue their passions and uncover hidden history.

Stay tuned for the premiere episodes as they bring to light not just the treasures of the past, but the stories behind them, showcasing a unique blend of history, adventure, and human connection. Don’t miss the chance to see Eric White’s incredible journey in the world of collecting.
