Israel Declares Hamas Defeated as Ceasefire Takes Effect

Israel’s military has announced that Hamas has been significantly weakened, marking a critical moment as a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip takes effect. Brigadier General Effie Defrin stated during a press briefing that “Hamas is not the Hamas of two years ago. Hamas has been defeated every place we fought them.” His remarks come as thousands of displaced Palestinians begin returning to their homes following a US-brokered ceasefire that commenced on March 15, 2024.

As the ceasefire took effect at noon local time, Israeli troops began to withdraw from several areas of the Gaza Strip. The announcement followed the Israeli government’s ratification of the ceasefire agreement with Hamas in the early hours of Friday. Defrin urged residents to remain cautious, advising them to avoid entering areas controlled by the Israel Defence Forces (IDF). He emphasized the importance of adhering to the ceasefire to ensure their safety.

The return of displaced Gazans to their homes has been marked by a sense of urgency. A significant column of individuals made their way north through the rubble towards Gaza City, which has been heavily impacted by recent military actions. Ismail Zayda, a 40-year-old resident of the Sheikh Radwan district, expressed relief that his home remained intact, although he lamented the destruction of his neighbors’ houses and entire neighborhoods.

The ceasefire agreement stipulates that Hamas is expected to release 20 living Israeli hostages within 72 hours. In exchange, Israel will release 250 Palestinians serving long sentences in Israeli prisons, along with 1,700 others detained during the conflict. This arrangement marks a significant step in the ongoing negotiations aimed at stabilizing the region.

US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff confirmed that the Israeli military had completed the initial phase of its withdrawal. The period for hostage release has officially begun, creating a pathway for humanitarian aid to flow back into the Gaza Strip. Aid trucks carrying essential supplies, including food and medical assistance, are set to enter the region to support civilians who have been living in tents after losing their homes.

In a televised address, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that the Gaza Strip remains demilitarized and that Hamas is disarmed. He stated, “If this is achieved the easy way then that will be good, and if not then it will be achieved the hard way.” This statement highlights Israel’s ongoing strategy to maintain security in the region as the ceasefire unfolds.

As the humanitarian situation in Gaza deteriorates, the ceasefire represents a glimmer of hope for many affected residents. The road ahead remains uncertain, but the immediate cessation of hostilities provides a crucial opportunity for recovery and rebuilding in the region.
