Shreyas Iyer Hospitalized After Spleen Injury in ODI Match

URGENT UPDATE: Indian batting star Shreyas Iyer is hospitalized in Sydney after suffering a serious injury during the third One Day International against Australia. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Iyer sustained a lacerated spleen while attempting a catch at the SCG on Saturday, November 4, 2023.

The injury occurred when Iyer fell awkwardly while dismissing Alex Carey, clutching his side in visible pain after hitting the ground. Medical personnel treated him on the field, but Iyer did not return to the match, which India won decisively by 9 wickets.

In an official statement released on Monday, November 6, the BCCI reported, “Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well.”

The Indian team doctor will remain with Iyer in Sydney to monitor his condition and daily progress.

India’s next challenge is a five-match Twenty20 series against Australia, which kicks off in Canberra on Wednesday, November 8. However, Iyer will not be part of the T20 squad as he focuses on recovery.

This unfortunate incident highlights the physical toll of professional cricket and the importance of player health. Fans and teammates alike are rallying around Iyer, hoping for a swift recovery. Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops.
