Two Dead in Urgent Underground Mine Explosion in NSW

URGENT UPDATE: A devastating underground mine explosion in Cobar, New South Wales (NSW), has left two people dead and another hospitalized. Emergency services rushed to the scene at approximately 3:45 AM today, where they discovered the aftermath of the explosion that claimed the lives of a man and a woman.

Initial reports confirmed that one man was pronounced dead at the scene. As rescuers worked diligently, two women were extracted from the mine, but tragically, one succumbed to her injuries shortly after. The second woman, suffering from significant hearing damage and shock, has been airlifted to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.

By 7:15 AM, police officially confirmed the fatalities, and emergency services remained actively engaged at the site. The situation is still developing, and authorities have announced that SafeWork NSW will spearhead an investigation into the incident, with police preparing a report for the coroner.

This mine, located about 40 km north of Cobar, is a key player in the region’s economy, primarily engaged in silver, zinc, and lead production. The area is renowned for its copper and gold mining operations, which are vital to local employment. The mine was acquired by Polymetals in 2024, with plans to resume mining activities earlier this year.

This tragic event underscores the dangers inherent in mining operations and the ongoing need for stringent safety protocols. As investigations continue, the community is left grappling with the shock of this incident and its profound implications.
