Aramco Launches Saudi Arabia’s First Quantum Computer Today

UPDATE: In a groundbreaking announcement today, Saudi Arabia officially launched its first quantum computer, marking a historic milestone for the Middle East’s technological landscape. This innovative leap is the result of a partnership between Aramco, one of the world’s leading energy companies, and Pasqal, a frontrunner in neutral-atom quantum computing.

The quantum computer, deployed at Aramco’s data center in Dhahran, is specifically designed for industrial applications, paving the way for advanced developments in the energy, materials, and industrial sectors across the region. This significant advancement aligns with Aramco’s strategy to enhance operational efficiency through cutting-edge digital technologies.

Ahmad O. Al-Khowaiter, Aramco’s EVP of Technology & Innovation, emphasized the importance of this technology: “We are thrilled to pioneer next-generation quantum capabilities, harnessing significant opportunities presented by this new frontier in computing.”

Pasqal’s quantum system can control 200 qubits arranged in programmable two-dimensional arrays, making it an ideal platform for testing advanced quantum algorithms and real-world industrial use cases. This system represents a substantial investment in the future of technology in Saudi Arabia and the broader Middle East.

Loïc Henriet, CEO of Pasqal, stated, “This is a historic milestone with Aramco. The deployment of our most powerful quantum computer yet is a piece of history and a landmark for the Middle East’s quantum future.”

Earlier in the year, Wa’ed Ventures, part of Aramco’s venture capital program, invested in Pasqal, supporting localization efforts that enable the company to build a robust presence in Saudi Arabia. This collaboration aims to strengthen the regional quantum ecosystem and develop high-tech talent through training programs and joint research opportunities for local engineers and scientists.

This development is not just a technological breakthrough; it signifies a commitment to innovation that could reshape industries throughout the region. As the first quantum computer dedicated to industrial applications in the Middle East, its impact is expected to resonate across various sectors, unlocking new value and enhancing productivity.

As the world watches, the implications of this partnership and the deployment of quantum technology will be closely monitored. The full potential of this quantum computer may soon redefine operational capabilities in energy and beyond.

This urgent update underscores the rapid advancements in quantum computing, signaling a new era for Saudi Arabia’s industrial landscape. As Aramco and Pasqal continue their collaboration, further developments are anticipated, positioning the Kingdom as a leader in this revolutionary technology.
