Urgent Fact Check: Viral Images Misleading After Bondi Attack

UPDATE: AAP FactCheck confirms that viral images purportedly depicting a mass gathering of “radical Islamists” in Melbourne following the tragic Bondi Beach attack are FALSE. The photos, mistakenly linked to the December 14, 2025 shooting that left 15 people dead during a Hanukkah celebration, actually show a peaceful Ashura procession held months earlier.

The misleading claims surged on social media soon after the Bondi attack, with posts suggesting that the gathering took place just days later. Users shared images of hundreds kneeling in prayer, erroneously captioned with inflammatory rhetoric. One post exclaimed, “INSANE! Radical Islamists just got together in Melbourne 3 days after 2 radicals SHOT & K*LLED 15 people at Bondi Beach in Sydney.”

However, these images were captured during a religious observance on July 7, 2025, specifically the 12th annual Ashura procession in Melbourne. This significant event, celebrated by Shia Muslims, took place at the Treasury Gardens in the city center. The videos that sparked the misinformation were drawn from a TikTok clip posted on the same day as the procession, proving their context was misrepresented.

Social media platforms are currently flooded with this disinformation, causing widespread concern and misunderstanding in the wake of the Bondi tragedy. The event at Bondi, where two gunmen opened fire, has deeply affected the community, and such false narratives only exacerbate tensions.

AAP FactCheck, an accredited member of the International Fact-Checking Network, has rigorously verified this information, stating that their process involves experienced journalists and thorough research to ensure accuracy. The organization emphasizes the importance of discerning fact from fiction, particularly in emotionally charged circumstances like the Bondi attack.

As the community seeks healing, it is crucial for individuals to rely on credible sources for information. Misinformation not only misguides public perception but can also fuel unwarranted fear and division.

WHAT’S NEXT: Authorities are urging social media users to verify the authenticity of images and claims before sharing. AAP FactCheck encourages the public to follow their updates on platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok to stay informed on fact-checked news.

The situation remains fluid, and as the investigation continues, vigilance against misinformation is paramount. Share this article to spread awareness about the importance of fact-checking in today’s digital landscape.
