Capel Vale Winery Launches Sale After 50 Years of Pioneering Winemaking

Capel Vale Wines, a significant player in the Western Australian wine industry, is set to change hands after nearly five decades of operation. Founded by Peter Pratten in 1974, the winery was the first family-owned establishment to recognize and cultivate the potential of the region’s cool climate for viticulture. The Pratten family has announced its decision to sell the winery through Colliers Agribusiness as part of a succession planning strategy.

The winery, located in the Geographe region, has expanded its vineyards to include sites in Wilyabrup, a subregion of Margaret River, and Mount Barker, part of the Great Southern wine area. Over the years, Capel Vale has garnered numerous awards, including Australian National Dry White Champion for its Riesling in 1986, celebrating a milestone for both the winery and Western Australian Riesling.

Details of the Sale and Winery Operations

Colliers Agribusiness associate director Nick Goode indicated that the property could be sold entirely or just the real estate. The winery spans 9.72 hectares, with 7.33 hectares planted with vines. Capel Vale produces several premium varieties, including malbec, chardonnay, shiraz, and merlot.

The winery features a high-capacity facility capable of processing up to 2,500 tonnes of grapes, extensive storage for approximately three million litres, and a bottling line that can produce 6,300 bottles per hour. It also includes a cellar door and hospitality facilities, making it a complete operation for wine production and tourism.

Mr. Goode emphasized that Capel Vale has a strong presence in the domestic market, distributing products across all Australian states and maintaining established relationships with major retailers. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the winery exported to over 20 countries, including markets in Europe, Asia, and the United States, reinforcing its international reputation.

Future Potential and Industry Interest

The sale of Capel Vale represents a unique opportunity for both established wine businesses and private investors. Mr. Goode noted significant interest in the property, highlighting its potential for growth and expansion in the wine market. The winery’s strategic location offers ideal growing conditions and proximity to major tourism destinations, making it an appealing investment.

Tim Altschwager, national director at Colliers Agribusiness, stated that the Geographe region is one of Australia’s most consistent cool-climate areas for winemaking. He described the property as a compelling proposition for buyers seeking a strategic foothold in the industry.

As the Pratten family embarks on the next chapter after 50 years, the legacy of Capel Vale Wines continues to influence the Western Australian wine landscape. The current expressions of interest campaign marks a pivotal moment for this historic winery, which has played a crucial role in shaping the region’s viticultural identity.
