David Littleproud Resigns as Leader of National Party in Australia

David Littleproud has announced his resignation as the leader of the National Party, effective immediately. The decision marks the end of his leadership, which began in 2022. During a press conference held at Parliament House in Canberra on Tuesday afternoon, the 49-year-old expressed that it was “time to pass the baton on.”

Littleproud, who represents the Queensland seat of Maranoa, stated, “I have done all I can do, and all I want to do.” He plans to continue serving as a member of Parliament, focusing on his role in the federal government while expressing a desire to remain engaged with party affairs. “I want to throw a few grenades and enjoy myself,” he added.

Reflecting on his tenure, Littleproud described the journey since the May 2022 election as challenging. “It has been a pretty tough road since the election,” he remarked, acknowledging the pressures of leadership. He candidly admitted, “I’m buggered and I’ve had enough,” indicating that remaining in his role would not be in the best interest of the party.

Littleproud emphasized his love for the National Party but recognized the need for new leadership. “It would be wrong for me to say that I’m the right person to continue to lead. That’s tough for me to say,” he noted, suggesting that someone with more energy could take over. “I’m just a bloke from western Queensland with a year 12 education,” he remarked, underlining his humble beginnings.

The resignation follows two leadership challenges that Littleproud faced since the last federal election. Despite these challenges, he enjoyed considerable support within the party room, which underscores his influence and commitment to the National Party.

As the National Party moves forward, discussions about his successor are expected to dominate party conversations. Littleproud’s departure marks a significant moment in Australian politics, prompting reflections on leadership and the future direction of the party.
