Warkworth House in East Devonport has found new custodians as Amber and Rhys Taylor recently completed the purchase of the historic property. This iconic residence, first built in 1860, has a storied past and a deep connection to the community, making it a significant addition to the couple’s life and aspirations.
The Taylors, known locally as the owners of Laneway Cafe, expressed their enthusiasm for the acquisition, describing their experience as “love at first sight.” Amber Taylor recounted the moment they discovered the listing, stating, “I almost dropped my phone.” By the end of that week, they had submitted their offer. “The wait to find out if we had been successful was excruciating,” she added, highlighting the emotional investment they placed in securing the home.
Plans for Restoration and Community Engagement
Warkworth House is not only a personal dream for the Taylors; they envision it as a vibrant community hub. Amber, who is also a musician, plans to transform the space into a sanctuary for the arts, hosting intimate concerts and cultural events. “We want a liveable, warm, bright environment to be in,” she explained, emphasizing their commitment to creating a destination that celebrates Tasmania’s rich heritage.
The couple intends to restore the property while adhering to heritage guidelines, ensuring that Warkworth House remains a proud part of East Devonport’s cultural landscape. They aim to incorporate tours and events that foster meaningful interactions with local culture, bridging the past with contemporary creativity.
Elders Tasmania agent Amy Rawston noted the historical significance of Warkworth House and its previous owners, particularly Captain Dick Burgess, a maritime figure, and his wife, Deda Ann Burgess, a celebrated local artist. Some of Deda’s original artwork still resides within the home, with plans for more pieces to be displayed in a local museum. “Playing a role in the Taylors becoming Warkworth House’s custodians is a career highlight,” Rawston commented, expressing pride in facilitating the sale of such an integral piece of local history.
A New Chapter for Warkworth House
The Taylors will receive the keys to Warkworth House in mid-August 2023, at which point they plan to assess the property’s needs for maintenance and restoration. Amber remarked, “Once we are in, we will see if there are things that are just maintenance, or others that need attention immediately. Time will tell.”
Warkworth House stands as a testament to the community’s artistic legacy and historical importance. As the Taylors embark on this new chapter, they are committed to breathing new life into the storied walls of this beloved landmark. “Warkworth House is truly iconic,” Rawston added, noting the excitement surrounding its future. “It will be more than restored; it will be reborn—a beacon of history, heart, and high art for generations to come.”
