Gus’ Place to Reopen in New Hotel on Bunda Street by 2027

The iconic cafe, Gus’ Place, will return to its original location on Bunda Street as part of a new hotel development, set to open by March 2027. The announcement was made by TP Dynamics, the developer behind the project, during a ceremony celebrating the completion of the hotel’s final structure on January 20.

Gus’ Place has been a significant part of Canberra’s hospitality scene since it opened in 1967. The cafe closed when its building was demolished to make way for the new hotel at Garema Place. The establishment is credited with pioneering street dining in the area, and its return is highly anticipated by the local community.

Construction Progress and Community Impact

The new hotel is expected to be completed by the end of 2026 and will feature 225 guest rooms, a day spa, function halls, and a rooftop bar and restaurant offering panoramic views of Canberra. Andrew Barr, Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory, expressed optimism about the project’s potential to revitalize the area, stating that it will serve as an “anchor and focal point” for the city’s tourism and hospitality sectors.

“This sort of investment adds five-star hotel rooms to our city, creating energy and activity in an important part of Australia’s national capital,” Barr noted, highlighting the significance of the hotel for Canberra’s urban renewal.

During the topping-out ceremony, Tony Pan, founder of TP Dynamics, shared his commitment to the project’s heritage. He emphasized the importance of preserving community memories through establishments like Gus’ Place. “The older I get, the more I respect the heritage. It’s our memory and very important for the community,” he said.

Future Vision and Hotel Operations

The reopening of Gus’ Place is part of a broader vision for the hotel, which will also include the relocation of Raku, a modern Japanese restaurant that previously operated on Bunda Place. Pan confirmed that negotiations to secure Gus’ Place have concluded, making its reopening coincide with the hotel launch.

Pan expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Crystalbrook Collection, the hospitality group managing the hotel. He noted that the team’s commitment to “responsible luxury” aligns with his vision for the hotel, which prioritizes environmentally sustainable practices.

Geoff York, CEO of Crystalbrook, praised the location of the hotel, calling it “one of the best in Australia.” He anticipates that while the hotel may not cater primarily to politicians, it will attract various business professionals and groups associated with government activities.

This revitalization of Garema Place, which has been under construction for months, aims to enhance the public space and improve pedestrian access. While some pathways have reopened, several remain restricted as the area undergoes significant changes.

The anticipated return of Gus’ Place is a testament to the enduring legacy of this beloved cafe and its role in the community. As construction continues, the excitement builds for both locals and visitors eager to experience the new offerings at Garema Place.
