JA Solar Unveils Groundbreaking Desert PV Solution White Paper

JA Solar has launched the first-ever Desert-Gobi-Wasteland PV Solution White Paper, marking a significant advancement in solar technology. The announcement occurred on November 29, 2025, during a sideline event at the 21st China SoG Silicon and PV Power Conference in Beijing. This white paper, developed in collaboration with TÜV NORD, combines JA Solar’s extensive experience in desert projects with TÜV NORD’s expertise in testing and certification.

The white paper addresses the extreme conditions found in desert, Gobi, and wasteland environments, including high UV exposure, sandstorms, and significant temperature fluctuations. By establishing a reliability testing framework that surpasses conventional standards, it provides vital guidance for site selection, system design, and equipment choice. This framework aims to transition the industry from experience-based practices to standardized approaches, ultimately enhancing the reliability of desert PV solutions.

At the heart of this initiative is JA Solar’s DesertBlue module, specifically engineered for use in desert and semi-arid regions. The module boasts an output of up to 650 W and achieves an efficiency of 24%. Notably, it features a nano-scale anti-dust coating that reduces transmittance degradation by over 32%, resulting in an extended service life of three to five years.

The structural design of the DesertBlue module includes a reinforced steel frame capable of withstanding front loads of 6000 Pa and rear loads of 4000 Pa. Additionally, its optimized thermal design allows for up to 0.6% higher output in high-temperature conditions. Field data has shown that the DesertBlue module operates nearly 5°C cooler in dusty environments, reinforcing its reliability in extreme climates.

Outdoor empirical tests conducted at JA Solar’s Shanghai Fengxian Base revealed a 7.09% increase in energy yield, while trials in the Ulan Buh Desert demonstrated a 4.98% improvement compared to conventional modules. The integration of these features not only reduces cleaning requirements but also lowers operational and maintenance costs, contributing to significant lifecycle savings and a decreased levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) for utility-scale projects.

The reliability framework, independently validated by TÜV NORD, covers critical factors such as UV aging, thermal cycling, sand abrasion, hotspot endurance, and high-temperature mechanical loading. The results indicate that DesertBlue’s durability exceeds the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) requirements, thereby reinforcing its long-term performance in harsh desert climates.

“The release of this white paper reflects JA Solar’s commitment to scenario-based innovation and high-performance PV solutions,” stated Aiqing Yang, Executive President of JA Solar. “Our goal is to empower global partners with solutions that maximize energy yield, lower lifecycle costs, and ensure long-term reliability in the world’s toughest climates.”

The full Desert-Gobi-Wasteland PV Solution White Paper is available for download, providing valuable insights for stakeholders in the renewable energy sector. This milestone not only positions JA Solar as a leader in the industry but also supports the global transition towards sustainable energy solutions.
