Dads Dive into Kids’ Hobbies: A New Way to Connect

Adrian Barich for STM.

Connecting with children in today’s fast-paced world often feels challenging. For many parents, bridging generational gaps requires stepping outside their comfort zones. This week, Australian media personality Adrian Barich embraced this challenge by joining his daughter, Madi Barich, at a trendy gym in the city known as S30.

S30 combines elements of a nightclub and a fitness studio, featuring dim lights and pulsating music designed to create an “immersive environment.” As Barich entered, he noted the atmosphere was more reminiscent of a party than a workout space, with low lighting that might have made him feel out of place. He described the scene as “what happens when a nightclub and a fitness studio meet and produce a sweaty, bass-thumping baby.”

Despite feeling like the oldest person in the room, Barich found joy in participating in Madi’s world. During the 45-minute class, he realized that engaging in activities that interest their children is a significant way for parents to bond. He humorously reflected on the experience, acknowledging his initial discomfort while also embracing the fun of being in a space dominated by younger individuals.

Real Connections Through Shared Experiences

The experience resonated with Barich, who believes that parents should actively engage in their children’s hobbies, even if it requires feeling awkward. This approach can lead to meaningful interactions and shared memories. He cited the example of Australian father and daughter duo Ben and Zara Tate, who transformed their pandemic boredom into a global sensation on TikTok. Known as @benandzara, they have gained popularity through their entertaining lip-syncing videos, showcasing how shared activities can strengthen family bonds.

Barich emphasized the importance of participation over perfection, stating, “It’s not about how many reps you can do or how much you can lift… it’s about the time you spend together and the memories you make.” He added that many memorable moments arise when family members step out of their comfort zones, even if it means facing potential embarrassment.

Social media has also played a role in bridging generational gaps. For instance, grandparents who engage with platforms like TikTok often become unexpected family stars. Barich humorously noted that when a grandparent attempts a TikTok dance, they can quickly become the family’s viral sensation, generating excitement and laughter among younger members.

The Value of Embracing Discomfort

Barich’s experience at S30 illustrates how age is merely a number and how genuine connections can form through shared laughter and willingness to engage in unfamiliar activities. He encourages parents to “meet your kids where they are,” whether it’s participating in a trendy class, trying out a new restaurant, or diving into the latest social media trends.

Ultimately, Barich’s adventure serves as a reminder that meaningful family connections can be cultivated through shared experiences, even those that may feel uncomfortable at first. In a world where distractions abound, taking the time to engage with children in their interests can foster a deeper understanding and strengthen relationships that will last a lifetime.
