The “Menstrual Equity Project” has been launched in The Bahamas to improve school attendance for girls facing menstrual health challenges. Initiated by KuCoin, the Global CSR Foundation, and the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA), this initiative aims to address period poverty in underserved communities. The project was conceptualized by Dr. Padmini Murthy, AMWA’s Global Health Lead, and Ms. Jing Cesarone, Founder and CEO of the Global CSR Foundation, and is part of KuCoin’s broader commitment to social responsibility.
Mrs. Ann Marie Davis, First Lady of The Bahamas, took a hands-on approach by leading the distribution of menstrual hygiene products to local schools and communities. At the distribution event, she highlighted the significant impact of the initiative, stating, “There are girls who stay home from school while menstruating, as they cannot afford to buy their napkins. I couldn’t believe the great need for this product here in The Bahamas in underserved communities.”
The project has its roots in earlier efforts, with its first distribution occurring in March 2024, which provided menstrual kits—including sanitary pads and menstrual cups—to beneficiaries across various regions, including the Republic of Suriname and New York. Following these initial distributions, the project expanded its reach to The Bahamas, aligning with local needs and conditions, particularly considering limited water resources and the costs associated with cleaning reusable products.
The collaboration with the Office of The Spouse of The Prime Minister has been crucial in ensuring that donations primarily consist of disposable sanitary pads. This approach aims not only to address immediate needs but also to equip women better during natural disasters such as hurricanes and tropical storms. The Menstrual Equity Project closely aligns with the existing Distribution of Feminine Pads Initiative led by the First Lady’s Office, both striving to reduce school absenteeism linked to period poverty.
Mrs. Davis expressed gratitude for the project’s impact, noting, “Your donation has made a tangible impact on the lives of those we support. The pads were distributed to Parliamentarians for inner city areas, NGOs, and the girls’ penitentiary centre. The recipients were overjoyed and expressed the great need for these supplies.”
In a personal letter to KuCoin, Mrs. Davis thanked the organization for its efforts, saying, “We are deeply thankful for your compassion and commitment to improving the lives of others. Thank you for your kindness and generosity. We look forward to continuing our work together to empower and support our communities.”
KuCoin’s commitment to corporate social responsibility has gained recognition, with the organization receiving the 2025 Corporate Social Responsibility Award from the World Women Organization in March 2025. Nancy Cheung, Chief Sustainability Officer at KuCoin, emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “The Menstrual Equity Project is not only about health and dignity—it’s about equity. We are committed to expanding this project globally, collaborating with more organizations to improve the living conditions of women and contribute to the well-being of women and children around the world.”
As KuCoin navigates a new chapter of global compliance and sustained growth, initiatives like the Menstrual Equity Project play a vital role in its long-term sustainability strategy. This project not only enhances the platform’s social value but also sets a benchmark for responsible innovation within the crypto industry.
