PCYC Lake Macquarie has announced a collaboration with OzHarvest and Arise Community Support to enhance services for young people in the Hunter region. This partnership aims to provide nutritious meals and supportive programs for youth, building on PCYC’s existing initiatives.
More than 1,600 children have already participated in PCYC’s before-school program, Fit for Life, this year. With the integration of OzHarvest, the program will now offer healthy meals, promoting both physical activity and mentorship among the participants. According to Sarah Lenton, the club manager, PCYC plays a critical role in fostering community connections. “We are committed to strengthening the safety net available to young people through joint efforts with other local community services,” she stated.
In addition to meal provisions, OzHarvest is also contributing to youth development through its ‘Nourish’ program. This free hospitality training initiative is designed for individuals aged 16 to 25, allowing participants to graduate with a nationally recognized Certificate II in Cookery. Such opportunities aim to equip young people with valuable skills for their future careers.
Arise Community Support is further enhancing the partnership by providing staff to oversee PCYC’s Friday night U-Nites program. This initiative is geared towards diverting youth from antisocial behavior, offering a safe space for social interaction. Chantelle Baglin, an Arise program facilitator, noted that approximately 75 percent of their youth participants engage in PCYC programs. “This creates a collaborative environment where we all support each other and share resources where needed,” she explained.
Established in 1937, PCYC has continuously aimed to empower young individuals to be active and engaged members of their communities. Today, its programs involve over 13,000 participants across New South Wales (NSW) each year, demonstrating the organization’s commitment to youth development and community support.
This collaborative effort between PCYC, OzHarvest, and Arise represents a significant step towards enhancing the resources available to young people in the Hunter region. By providing nutritious meals and essential training, these organizations are collectively working to ensure that every young person has the opportunity to thrive.
