South Australia School Addresses Claims of Christmas Cancellation

An Adelaide primary school has responded to claims from a concerned parent who alleged it had cancelled Christmas celebrations. The controversy arose when the parent contacted FiveAA radio on Friday, expressing frustration over reports that Glen Osmond Primary School would not be holding any Christmas-themed activities this year.

The parent stated, “We’ve been told that not a single child will sing a Christmas carol or take part in any Christmas-themed activities.” They further claimed that teachers had been instructed not to acknowledge Christmas in the classroom.

In a statement released on Friday afternoon, the South Australia Education Department refuted these claims, asserting that no directive had been issued to prohibit or discourage Christmas festivities at the school. A spokesperson confirmed, “The school’s principal has confirmed this morning that no staff member has been directed to not acknowledge or celebrate Christmas at Glen Osmond Primary School.”

The spokesperson emphasized that the school celebrates a variety of cultural events each year, including Christmas, and noted that last year, the school hosted the “Carols on the Oval” event in collaboration with the Glen Osmond Baptist Church.

Despite the school’s clarification, the issue gained traction on social media, prompting mixed reactions from the public. Some users expressed frustration, advocating for a more inclusive approach. Georgina Travers commented on Facebook, “If it is a multicultural initiative (which I am always happy to support), why are we leaving one (Christian culture) out? I thought the whole point of multiculturalism was to be inclusive and welcoming to ALL.”

Others took a more confrontational stance, suggesting that students who do not wish to participate in Christmas activities should remain at home. The school has a history of celebrating various multicultural occasions, including Diwali and Harmony Day, which has led to further discussions about how to balance inclusivity while honoring different cultural traditions.

As the dialogue continues, Glen Osmond Primary School remains committed to fostering an environment that acknowledges and celebrates a wide range of cultural festivities, ensuring that all students feel included and valued.
