UK Attorney General Advocates for ICC at Prosecutor’s Annual Report Launch

The Attorney General of the United Kingdom delivered a significant statement at the International Criminal Court (ICC) on March 15, 2025. This address coincided with the launch of the Office of the Prosecutor’s Annual Report for 2025, highlighting the UK’s steadfast support for the ICC’s mission to uphold international justice.

The Attorney General emphasized the critical role that the ICC plays in addressing serious crimes such as genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. In a world increasingly challenged by conflict and injustice, the UK remains committed to the principles enshrined in the Rome Statute, which established the ICC in 2002.

Commitment to Justice and Accountability

In their remarks, the Attorney General acknowledged the challenges facing the ICC, including funding and the need for broader international cooperation. The report presented during the event detailed the ICC’s achievements over the past year, as well as ongoing investigations and prosecutions.

The Attorney General underscored the importance of collective action among nations to support the ICC’s efforts. “As we witness ongoing global conflicts, it is imperative that we stand united in our commitment to justice and accountability,” they stated.

The ICC’s annual report revealed that, in 2025, the court received more than 4,000 new cases, reflecting an urgent need for judicial processes to address violations of international law. The Attorney General pointed out that the UK’s financial contributions have been essential to the ICC’s operations, amounting to approximately £12 million annually.

Looking Forward

The Attorney General also announced plans for future collaborations between the UK and the ICC. This includes initiatives aimed at enhancing legal frameworks to support victims of international crimes. The UK government is dedicated to providing resources and expertise to bolster the court’s capabilities in delivering justice.

As the event concluded, the Attorney General reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to the ICC and international law. “Today, we reinforce our pledge to hold the perpetrators of the most heinous crimes accountable,” they concluded, echoing the sentiments of many attending the launch.

The proceedings at the ICC in The Hague underscored the importance of international cooperation in the fight against impunity, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing dialogue about global justice. The UK’s proactive stance not only reinforces its leadership role but also inspires other nations to contribute to a more just world.
