WorkSafe Urges Height Safety Overhaul After KiwiRail Incident

A recent incident involving a fall from height has prompted WorkSafe New Zealand to urge all businesses operating at elevated locations to reassess their safety protocols. This call to action follows the sentencing related to an event that nearly resulted in the death of a KiwiRail employee.

On December 4, 2023, the Wellington District Court fined KiwiRail $200,000 after a worker fell approximately six meters while attempting to secure a power pole. The incident occurred at a construction site in Christchurch during a routine operation. The employee, who sustained serious injuries, was fortunate to survive, but the event raised significant concerns regarding workplace safety standards.

According to WorkSafe, the fall could have been avoided with proper safety measures in place. The organization emphasized the critical need for businesses to implement and maintain effective height safety systems. “The risks associated with working at height are well documented, and employers have a legal obligation to ensure the safety of their workers,” stated WorkSafe spokesperson Jane Doe.

Following the incident, investigations revealed multiple lapses in KiwiRail’s safety protocols. These included inadequate training for staff, insufficient safety equipment, and a failure to conduct regular risk assessments. WorkSafe’s findings highlight a broader issue within the industry, as many companies may not be adhering to established safety guidelines.

In light of this incident, businesses are encouraged to review their health and safety practices, particularly those involving work at height. WorkSafe recommends that organizations conduct thorough audits of their safety procedures and ensure that employees receive proper training on the use of safety equipment and risk management strategies.

The urgency of this message resonates particularly in industries where height work is common, such as construction and maintenance. Employers must prioritize safety to prevent future accidents that could result in severe injuries or fatalities.

KiwiRail’s case serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of neglecting safety standards. As the organization faces penalties, the focus now shifts to ensuring that lessons learned from this incident lead to meaningful changes within the sector.

Moving forward, WorkSafe plans to increase its outreach efforts, providing resources and guidance to help businesses improve their safety practices. The organization aims to foster a culture of safety that protects workers across all sectors, particularly those exposed to the dangers of working from heights.

Employers are urged to take proactive steps, as the safety of their workforce depends on their commitment to rigorous safety standards and practices.
