AFL Stars Embrace Global Adventures During Off-Season Break

Eagles and Dockers have made the most of their off-seasons, travelling at home and abroad before pre-season kicks off.

The off-season has turned into a globe-trotting adventure for players from the West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Dockers, as they take the opportunity to recharge after a demanding AFL season. Following their elimination in the finals last month, the Dockers and Eagles have embraced diverse experiences, ranging from tropical getaways to local fishing trips in Western Australia.

Fremantle captain Alex Pearce and midfielder Hayden Young have been notably active, spending quality time together in various locations. Their travels began in Vietnam, where they explored the scenic Ha Giang Loop, a 370-kilometer motorbike route acclaimed for its breathtaking views and cultural immersion. Following their time in Vietnam, they ventured to Ireland, sharing numerous photos on social media that captured the essence of their journey. Young expressed his gratitude with a heartfelt post on Instagram, stating, “Thanks-a-million Ireland.”

Meanwhile, star ruckman Luke Jackson enjoyed a sun-soaked holiday at Hamilton Island. Jackson shared several images from his tropical escape. His teammate Brennan Cox also vacationed in the same location, enjoying time on a boat with his partner Keah Waters and their young son, Arlo.

The two clubs’ players are not just exploring far-off places. The Reids, Murphy and Harley, returned to their home state of Victoria. Harley visited his childhood football club, while Murphy donned the suit he wore when he received the Rising Star medal at the Brownlow Medal ceremony, sharing his stylish look from the Melbourne spring racing carnival.

The Eagles embarked on their own team trip to Thailand, with players like Liam Baker and rising star Tyrell Dewar posting moments from their holiday. Baker was seen enjoying a drink with teammates Clay Hall and Jack Hutchison. In a parallel adventure, Jack Graham left Thailand to experience the architectural wonders of Barcelona, Spain. There, he caught a striking swordfish off the coast of Majorca, receiving compliments from fishing enthusiast Mark Lecras on social media.

Graham’s European journey continued in London, where he connected with teammate Matt Flynn and other AFL players, sharing a snapshot outside Buckingham Palace. Another player, Harry Barnett, also shared glimpses of his travels in Europe with partner Sophie Walsh.

Among the most notable stories is that of Carlton recruit Matt Owies, who proposed to his now fiancée Kristen Varnis during their vacation in Greece, marking a joyous occasion in the off-season.

Not every player traveled far. Young talent Ryan Maric enjoyed a brief getaway to New Zealand with partner Emily Langdon, posting a cheerful message about their quick trip. Meanwhile, Caleb Serong, fresh off winning his third consecutive Doig Medal, demonstrated that local adventures can be just as fulfilling. He spent a long weekend in Margaret River, visiting renowned vineyards such as Menzies Vineyard and the award-winning Moss Wood. Serong shared his experiences on Instagram, highlighting the beauty of local attractions.

Fellow Dockers player Neil Erasmus also enjoyed a staycation, showcasing his fishing exploits in the northern regions of Western Australia. His playful exchange with teammate Jordan Clark on social media captured the camaraderie among players, with Clark jokingly advising Erasmus to “have a beer.”

As the AFL off-season unfolds, players from both clubs are making the most of their downtime, whether through international travel or local explorations. The experiences gained during this period will undoubtedly contribute to their rejuvenation ahead of the upcoming season.
